KAPSEAN is a privately held Massachusetts-based software company. After selling his last venture to storage giant EMC, company founder Shawn Nagar was left wondering why enterprise-class network storage is so prohibitively expensive/complex for use in a small business, office or home environment, while its primary components (disk drives and IP networking equipment) are universally affordable and simple to use. Shawn put together a team of networking and storage industry veterans with the singular goal of dramatically driving down network storage cost and complexity, while retaining the advantages of enterprise-class features like online capacity expansion and fault tolerance. In other words, make enterprise-class network storage as ubiquitous as direct attached storage.

By developing patent-pending iSCUBE (“ice cube”) storage virtualization software to leverage the convergence of four disruptive technologies (Ethernet, SATA Drives, Linux and iSCSI), the KAPSEAN engineering team led by CTO Martin Blitz has driven down the cost of enterprise-class network storage to consumer price levels and eliminated complexity by creating a completely virtualized storage system –- disks, controllers and access path. Designed to run on modular hardware and make storage management almost autonomic, iSCUBE software facilitates tailored solutions to meet budgets/expertise-levels across the entire customer continuum — from consumer to enterprise.

VP of Business Development, Leonardo Salazar crafted a software-only business model designed to leverage the existing PC ecosystem for the remaining hardware/software components needed to build “best-of-breed” network storage solutions for the lowest cost possible – keeping us focused on core competency and an expedited path to profitability. To ensure broad market acceptance, VP of Engineering, Roger Gaudet created a “User” version of our software that prompts for confirmation before self-installing on a standard “x86” PC and repurposing it into a storage appliance; and a “OEM” version that self-installs on headless platforms without prompting for confirmation.

Universally affordable and able to mask complex network storage terminology like SAN, NAS, RAID, iSCSI, the basic version of our software enables solutions that are as simple to use as USB disk drives for the average consumer, small office/home office or small business with their limited budget/expertise, while advanced software versions offer a medium-sized business or an enterprise storage administrator the full benefits of a dynamic virtual SAN.
